The obvious question is why they differ, and the obvious suspicion is that one of them is a discount or an introductory rate. The first year costs more because it contains the Jetson Orin placed and configured, your archive loaded and the first training run; every year after is the service running.
Neither. They differ because the first year contains work the later years do not.
What the first year contains
The appliance, placed and configured. An NVIDIA Jetson Orin, set up before it reaches you and arriving working. Shipping is included in the U.S.; international is $99.
Your material loaded. The unglamorous majority of the work: getting the words out of your documents, dealing with scans, finding duplicates and near-duplicates, and surfacing the contradictions so you can decide which version is authoritative.
The first training run. The part everyone pictures, and the shortest.
Your integrations set up. Whatever the assistant needs to reach, connected for you.
Then the service itself — the same thing every later year contains.
What every year contains
Retraining as your material grows. Not a one-off event. Your correspondence and documents keep arriving, and an assistant trained once is slowly becoming a record of the past.
Updates over the air, as they are validated. You never install anything.
Monitoring, health checks and backups. If something drifts, we catch it before you do.
Support in writing, from the people who built your system.
The equipment as our problem. If it breaks we fix or replace it, shipping both ways, while the service runs. If it arrives damaged or fails on first setup, tell us within 72 hours of delivery and we replace it free, shipping both ways.
What is not in the price, and never appears later
No start fee. No usage charge. No per-person charge. No meter on your own machine, whatever you ask it in a given month.
The one thing that stays yours is electricity, and the machine draws about as much as a desk lamp.
Nothing goes to an outside model unless you allow it — once, for a single question, or for a while, or always. When you do, we choose which service, and it is paid for out of the same fee. No extra bill, ever.
What you own at the end of the year
This is the part most likely to be glossed over elsewhere, so here it is directly.
The machine stays ours to place, maintain and replace; nothing becomes yours alone. It does not become your property at twelve months or at any other point. If the service ends we collect it, or wipe the one in our cabinet, and delete the trained model, confirmed in writing — there is nothing for you to store, sell or dispose of.
The model trained on your material is yours alone. It lives on that machine, it is never pooled with anyone else's, never shared, and never used to improve any other model. A copy of your material already lives on the backup drive we supply and you own, and you receive written confirmation of deletion afterwards.
So what the year buys is not an asset. It is the loading, the training and the care — which is what the two numbers describe, and why the first one is larger.
The honest comparison
Against two or three hosted AI subscriptions, this is more expensive in cash. It was always going to be. What changes is that your own material can be used at all, and that none of the work is yours.
Whether that trade is worth it depends on whether you have questions only your own records can answer. If you cannot name three, the honest answer is to wait.
